One thing we found from running NOTHY! (Not Over The Hill Yet!) is the main benefit of co-production for them is that you don't have to define yourself as a service-user (nobody wants to be one of them!) nor a volunteer (that might mean being committed to do something, not just something you do because you want to) because the co-production model means you are actually both. When we put reciprocal support into play, i.e, everyone gives, but everyone also receives, it makes it very sustainable.
The biggest drawback has been funders who have the expectation that people should be defined as one or the other. I think unless they have a change in mindset you have to count everyone twice and give them the benefits of each role on paper!
